Stoves - What Type is Right For You?

When you think of a heating stove, you may picture old westerns where everyone is huddled around the woodstove. These stoves were used to heat the home, to cook on and to heat up the water for baths. Yes - baths in the olden days were taken in the main room in front of the woodstove. These stoves were made out of cast iron.

Many people still choose to have an old style cast iron stove or a pot bellied stove in their home. However, there are many types of fuel that can be used today for these stoves. Some of them have been made into gas stoves with a woodstove look. Pellet stoves use small pellets of wood or corn as their fuel. It's much cleaner than traditional wood. Many people still opt to go out and cut down a tree and split wood. It is a matter of personal preference.

Coal stoves are also quickly becoming popular. There are many types of coal that can be used from the very small "pea" coal to larger pieces of coal. Unlike wood, coal is generally too messy to be stored in the house and needs to be stored in it's own storage spot like a shed specifically for this purpose. Coal can be dirty and messy. That's not a mess you want in your home. It does, however, burn cleaner and longer. Many coal stoves and pellet stoves have hoppers that you can fill up and the fuel is fed in as it is needed. This makes for less work.

Most of the types of stoves discussed here are used for heating the home. Cooking stoves are generally in the kitchen and are not a great source of heat. There are faux stoves that are simply purchased for aesthetic value and not for their heating properties. Some people are even creating outdoor living spaces centered around a stove placed on a patio for heat on those chilly nights.

When shopping for a stove take into consideration how it will be used. Will it be for a heat source or simply for looks? Do you want the aroma and work of chopping wood or would you rather have a self feeding hopper that comes with coal, wood and corn pellets? Do you have the storage for your fuel of choice. Maybe you prefer gas to any of the other choices. These are all important things for you to know before you go to pick out your new stove.

Bosch Dishwasher Features

Quietness is an essential design element in a household dishwasher and bosch have made sure that their machines are among the quietest in the world. The last thing you need to hear as you try to sleep or worse still over the television is a dishwasher working away sounding like an aircraft engine. Many review sites and consumer surveys will show that these machines are top in the ratings for low noise levels. One of the major reasons for this is the way that two electric motors are incorporated into the machines design rather than one which is what you find in most dishwashers. Using two smaller suspended motors is quieter than using one larger one and also reduces vibration which is another source of noise. The second reason for them being so quiet is cotton insulation along with a bitumen coating on the sides of the machine.

Heating the water is one of the most expensive parts of running a dishwasher sequence. Traditionally an element at the bottom of the appliance that is submerged when the machine is filled is used to heat the water all at the same time and this use's up a lot of energy and it takes time to get the water to the required temperature. The system designed by bosch use's a chamber with small heating coils located at the water inlet to quickly heat the water to the correct temperature as it enters the machine thereby saving both time and money.

Sensors are used throughout the dishwasher cycle to keep the amount of soap, water and energy used to as low a level as possible. One sensor detects load size or how many dishes are in the unit and can distinguish between plates and pots. As the cycle runs another sensor can actually detect how much more cleaning is required by measuring how the clear the water is and another sensor checks constantly the water temperature. The sensors readings are used by the machines processor to control and adjust the washing cycle length, temperature, detergent usage and rinse time. This allows the best possible wash at the minimum cost saving you time and money and being more energy efficient.
Bosch also has a unique way of drying the dishes at the end of the wash and rinse cycle that does not involve a separate drying cycle. The drying cycle is actually built into the rinse cycle by making the final rinse water very hot. It then condenses on the walls of the dishwasher leaving the dishes dry and the reason this happens is because the washer walls are made of stainless steel which is a cool material. It is a combination of cool stainless steel and very hot water that causes the condensation effect that effectively dries the dishes.

Leaks in an appliance can cause a lot of damage and repairing this damage can be very expensive. Bosch dishwashers have an Aquastop leak system built into them which consists of a water sensor located in a small well at the lowest part of the machine. If water is detected within the machine then something is leaking and the machine automatically shuts of the inlet and drains the machine before any serious damage can be done.

History of the Dishwasher

The first recorded evidence of a dishwasher was from 1850 when a simple hand turned splashing device attached to a wooden tub made by Joel Houghton was given a patent. Developing on this idea L.A. Alexander added gears to a spinning rack holding dishes that allowed it to be spun inside a tub of water and this was patented in 1865. Both of these were very crude and made entirely of wood and did not actually clean dishes very well.

Josephine Cochrane was a wealthy woman and had engineering in her blood as her grandfather John Fitch was famous for inventing the steamboat. She also liked to entertain friends frequently and hold social events at her home resulting in a lot of dishes needing to be cleaned each time. The crockery she used for entertaining was expensive and was often getting broken by the servants while washing up. Getting fed up with this she decided to build a dishwasher that could wash dishes quickly without breaking them. She built a machine consisting of a wooden wheel lying flat in a copper boiler which could be turned either by hand or driven by a power source via a pulley. Wire framed compartments made to fit her dishes were attached to this wheel and the combination of it spinning and soapy hot water being showered on them by the boiler resulted in the first efficient dishwasher.

She took her dishwasher to the world fair in 1893 in Chicago where it won the highest award and people ranging from friends to hotel and restaurant owners were queuing up asking for a dishwasher machine of their own. Quickly she patented the invention and opened a production factory to build them and this company became the household appliance giant today known as KitchenAid. More companies also started making other versions some with conveyor belts and others with baskets spun by various methods both using a jet or spray of hot water poured from above to clean the dishes.

It wasn't till the 1920's that any significant advances were made to the design of these machines when permanent plumbing was introduced to hook them up to a constant water supply. Only restaurants, hotels and wealthy families had these appliances as they were large and expensive and it wasn't till 1937 that a dishwasher small enough for a home was built. It was built by William Howard Livens and looked more like the washers we have today with mesh baskets inside a metal container and a front opening door with a drying element introduced into its design in 1940. Gradually they became smaller, cheaper and more efficient and by the end of the 50s were getting more popular as a home kitchen appliance. Popularity continued to increase with most homes in the USA owning one by the end of the 70s. Today they are popular all through Europe and the Middle East where they took longer to catch on than in the USA.

A large range is available today with many big name manufacturers like Whirlpool, Bosch Maytag, GE and many other creating a very competitive market.

Tips For Choosing Basic Small Kitchen Appliances For Your Home

Just as every cook needs a good spatula, you need the right basic small kitchen appliances as well. You can't begin to expand your cooking style and abilities without the basics such as a good mixer, blender and food processor.

When it comes to mixers, you have the option to choose either a hand mixer or a stand mixer. There are different types of hand mixers from just the simple two beater electric kind that perform basic operations in the kitchen like mashing potatoes to fancier versions that are intended for the serious cook. Stand mixers make mixing easy because you don't have to hold anything and many come with their own bowl that attaches to the base. Depending on your cooking needs, you can find them in the basic light-duty cooking to heavy-duty needs for once again, the serious cook.

Another small kitchen appliance that you may consider owning is a food processor. These handy machines make life easy for the chef who does a lot of chopping or slicing. Processors range from the small one or two cup varieties that do simple jobs like slice carrots to larger machines that can do everything from chop to puree to grating even the hardest cheese. The more complicated food processors can perform many more functions that chopping and grating however, so you have lots to choose from when shopping.

The one small appliance that most folks cannot live without is their blender. Able to do more than make smoothies, today's blenders are a staple in just about any kitchen. Some tasks that you can use your blender for are mixing salad dressings, blending soups, mixing delicious milkshakes, and my favorite: crushing ice for margaritas. Once again, like the other small appliances mentioned above, you have many options to choose from depending on what you want to accomplish with your blender.

Most of the appliances here can be purchased in a variety of colors to match your kitchen decor. You can spend a little or a lot and get as many bells and whistles as you desire. With the right appliances and tools in your kitchen, you can become a super chef and be able to whip up tasty dishes for your friends and family in a heartbeat.

Figure Out the Best Dishwashers in the Market

A dishwasher is a useful and convenient kitchen appliance. It cuts down on the time spent on cleaning various kitchen utensils. If you are buying it for the first time, you have to be extremely careful. Dishwashers range in large numbers that choosing one is a bit overwhelming. It is essential to figure out which are the best ones to match your kitchen needs. The answer is simpler. The best dishwasher has excellent features, right size, and warranty that you want. Described below are important features and parts you must be aware of: whether you want to go for pricey stainless ones or looking for economic options, consider this:

Dimensions: Decide what you want: standard 24" size or compact 18" size. An 18" is a perfect choice for a small house as it can hold 8 place settings, whereas a 24" has standard size that holds 14 place settings.
Type: Which types you need: portable, built in, or counter top models? You can easily find a dishwasher for your kitchen size. The countertop style is best for close quarters.
Energy: These days every one is energy conscious and so it's important to look for the dishwasher that can conserve both water and electricity.
Washing Cycles: Usually, these appliances have several cycles that include Pots & Pans, Normal, Light, and Rinse Only. They have different roles to play. Some may work better for glassware whereas others work better for oily dishes. Make sure the selected dishwasher has the cycles that you want to use most often.
Performance: The overall performance of a dishwasher is determined by factors that include washing cycle, dishwasher load, and what's being washed.
Stacking: Never forget to check the structure of design. The rack layout is important to see how many dishes can fit inside the dishwasher. You may find some with special features like cutlery tray in the door or wine glass rack. The right layout can help you save space.
Maker: Choose a well known manufacturer. Do a little research and see whose reputation is the best and who can provide the superior products. Whirlpool, Hotpoint, LG, Maytag, among others are world known manufacturers and can serve you in the best possible way.
Timer: It is essential to consider it to avoid a noisy one. A timer operates a dishwasher at your own convenience and can set a delay-control if you wish.
Controls and appearance: The different knobs and controls must be durable, simple to use, and clean easily. Appearance and color is a matter of choice. You can choose a color which fits your kitchen dcor perfectly.
Budget: Set your budget and stick to it. The best appliances in the market are the ones that can save your money and do the job you need them to do.
Manufacturer warranties: They are important. Check them when buying a dishwasher. You may even refer to dishwasher reviews available at online resources, if you want to get the best dishwasher deal.

Gas and Electricity in Ovens - Which is Better?

There are more than two separate camps of cooks in the debate of gas versus electricity ovens. Some die-hard stalwarts, including many professional chefs, will insist that unless you're cooking with gas then you're not really cooking at all. Others swear by the reliability of cooking with an electric oven, whilst many cooks prefer to mix and match options with gas hobs and electric ovens.

With gas and electricity, it really comes down to a matter of personal preference and cooking style, but there are some general tips that can be observed to save you money on your utility bills whilst cooking.

One of the general principles of gas and electricity when it comes to ovens is that gas ovens are more expensive to buy but cheaper to run. Electric ovens, on the other hand, are cheaper to buy but more expensive to run. If you are investing a significant amount of money into an oven which is a long-term purchase rather than a quick fix, then it will probably work out cheaper over time to buy a quality gas oven rather than an electric one. Gas and electricity prices will invariably fluctuate but if electricity prices rise then gas prices tend to increase in tandem, and gas is usually cheaper than electricity as a rule.

There are a number of factors that can make different ovens cheaper to run though. Fan-assisted ovens, for example, increase the temperature inside the oven and spread the heat more evenly, allowing for a smoother cooking process. As extra heat is generated, fan-assisted ovens can cook at lower temperatures, thereby using less gas and electricity. Not only do fan-assisted ovens cook more thoroughly, they also cook more quickly, making them more fuel efficient and time effective.

Most ovens these days are electric, and what sets them apart from gas ovens is that they are cheaper to buy, tend to be more reliable, and can be more versatile. Modern electric ovens come with a host of additional functions including thermal grilling, defrosting, batch baking, and timers that can be programmed. Gas ovens tend to be more traditional but ultimately give cooks more control with their oven temperature.

In terms of oven hobs, gas is almost universally accepted as better for cooking, whereas electric is almost universally accepted as being better for cleaning purposes. Ultimately, whether you decide to go for straight gas, straight electric or a mixture of gas and electric, the oven you require will depend on the type of cook you are. For a solid all-rounder though, a fan-assisted electric oven with gas hobs is an excellent mix of gas and electricity, which is both versatile to use and reasonably cheap to run.

Dishwashers - The Different Aspects

Dishwashers are generally found in homes, restaurants, and hotels. They are used for cleaning and drying food utensils. They have freed every one from washing the utensils manually. But, due to their large size many homes still do not have them. In this regard many manufacturers have introduced portable appliances: size does not matter as far as dishwasher goes.

The reason why they score high these days is many people prefer them. Since, they have to handle irregular size and shapes utensils and dishes: care must be taken to choose the right dishwasher. Before throwing your dishes into it, take a minute to see if it can damage your dishwasher parts or not.

Working of Dishwasher

Normally, they involve physical scrubbing to remove unwanted dirt and oil from the dish. The mechanical dishwashers clean the utensils with hot water spray and usually at a water temperature around 55-65 degree Celsius. In the first step, detergent added water cleans the utensil after the clean water is added to remove the detergent. A good detergent can be used to remove stubborn stains from the utensils. Compact dishwashers are used in small homes and have fast drying capabilities.

The Different Kinds

The different kinds of dishwashers are stand free dishwashers, built-in dishwashers, and semi-integrated dishwashers. There are also freestanding dishwashers that are cheapest and occupy a large place. They are comfortable for large restaurants and hotels where huge vessels are used. In addition, dishwasher installation takes longer time, requires larger space, and more money.

Integrated dishwasher or built-in dishwasher has a control panel that is designed to fit within the kitchen having full height door. On the contrary, semi-integrated dishwashers can fit into a drawer line kitchen. You can purchase a panel from the company to match your kitchen unit.

Choosing the Right Dishwasher

Best dishwasher should have excellent performance features, including capacity of machine and amount of dishes to be cleaned at a particular time. You can compare different manufacturers by using their ratings.

Moreover, energy efficiency is another important thing that must be taken into consideration because the dishwasher consumes a lot of energy to wash or clean the dishes. This will help in reducing your monthly electricity bill. Also, check if the sensor is capable of maintaining the temperature in the tanks or not. It must extend machine life by reducing operating speeds of pump. Right washing cycle is important to reduce the amount of water used. It should have the capability to recycle the water.

How to get the most from your dishwasher?

Instead of spending money on reinstalling or repairing, it is wise to prevent it from damage.

Check if the chord is safely plugged.
Check if the breaker is tripped or not.
Make sure the door is completely locked.
Make sure the cycle button is pushed properly.
Clean machine once in a month to avoid the lime and grease.
The filter screen and sprayer arm should be placed correctly at the bottom.
Avoid frequent dishwasher repair by using a dishwasher freshener.

Maintenance of Humidifiers

A humidifier is a household appliance used to increase the moisture or humidity in a room or the entire house. These come in various brands, shapes and sizes - point-of-use humidifiers are the most commonly used to humidify a single room, whereas furnace humidifiers or full-house humidifiers are used, connected to the main HVAC system, to humidify the entire house. A humidifier can help with problems caused by dry air such as dry skin, swollen nasal passages, cracked lips, asthma, sinus headaches, etc. Consumers mostly prefer the digital humidifiers as these help them set their desired temperatures.

Types of Humidifiers- Broadly classified into 2 types - warm or cool humidifiers. The most popular type of humidifier consists of a reservoir, a fan and wick and works on the principle of evaporation. The other types are vaporizer or steam humidifiers (warm mist humidifiers), impeller humidifiers (the cool mist humidifiers), ultrasonic humidifiers and hydro-pneumatic capillary system humidifiers.

Disadvantages and Risks The use of a humidifier can allow the reproduction of dust mites or the growth of harmful mold, which may cause allergies or respiration problems to children and the elderly. The temperature levels should be relatively at 30% and 50%. Humidifiers can cause severe health problems if the users fail to follow the instructions or the manufacturer's directions.

Comparison The main choice is between warm and cool humidifiers. The difference is dependent on individual choice of whether you like warm or cool moist air, be it a single room or the entire house. Warm humidifiers, in general, make less noise but can be used only in single rooms. Cool humidifiers on the other hand can cover a larger space, but tend to make noise as they have moving parts. Every humidifier has its own advantage or disadvantage and making a choice on one can be difficult. If the consumer understands how they work, it becomes easier to choose which one you need. Warm humidifiers use a lot of electricity as they require a heating element to heat the water and if overused, air can get muggy. Cool humidifiers on the other hand, require less electricity as they do not need to heat the water, are safe around children with no burn risks. But they end up making noise and some require regular replacement.

Maintenance Most consumers are worried about the care and maintenance required to keep their humidifiers in good condition. Good news is that by following a few simple steps you will be able to keep the humidifiers in top condition. Neglecting the cleaning and maintenance of an electrical appliance can only hinder its performance. Understanding the instructions by the manufacturer, taking care of filters and using the right disinfectants can help you maintain your portable or fixed humidifier. In case of fixed humidifiers, it is recommended that you get help by professionals to get them examined after long periods of usage.

Single room or portable humidifiers are most commonly used as they are relatively cheap and easy to install. Whole house or fixed humidifiers are more complex installations that require professional help. Most consumers prefer using multiple single room or portable humidifiers for each room or space in their house. So buying a portable or fixed humidifier is a choice that involves serious thinking. End of the day, keeping your family's health in mind, the right choice is yours to make.

The Benefits of a Fresh Air Purifier

The need for a fresh air purifier has never been as intense as now. Everyday, we are exposed to various elements in the air such as bacteria, viruses and many other particulates that has the potential not only to cause allergy but also several diseases such as flu, colds, allergic rhinitis and many other respiratory illnesses. Even the air that we breathe at home could be as dangerous as the air we breathe outside. Therefore, it is very advisable that we install a device that cleans our indoor air so we can be assured that the air we breathe is cleaner and healthier.

We all dream to own a house in front of the beach and enjoy the cool breeze brought by the fresh air. It is so relaxing and revitalizing that sometimes getting a cold or flu can be a total spoiler. Have you ever wondered why oftentimes most of the people who catch flu or colds are those who live nearby the seashore or those who are even closer to nature? Studies show that the people who inhale fresh air that is not purified or cleaned are those who oversee the fact that though our natural resources bring fresh air, there are still dangerous elements in the air that can be harmful to us too. Hence, the use of a fresh air purifier would not only lessen the risks of inhaling an unclean air but also decreases the chances of being allergic.

We all think that our homes are the safest refuge we could ever have. Never did we realize that most illnesses we get are those that come exactly from sources that we least expect them-our homes. Our homes are usually close quarters thereby becoming a prime location for viruses and allergens. If you have been a keen observant, you will see that dust easily build up in our tables, ashtrays, pillows and other parts of the house that are not frequently visited or things seldom used.

When the lighting is right, you will also see that some dust particles are hanging over the air. Imagine all these irritant come into your airways and cause several illnesses. A fresh air purifier will help eliminate unwanted particulates in the air and cleans it for better and healthier environment.

Washing Machine Drum Problems

Washing machines are machines that are designed to wash the laundry. Theywork by using thermal energy, mechanical energy and by the chemical action.

The thermal energy is supplied by the temperature that is used in the wash bath whereas the chemical action is induced by the detergents that are used in these equipment. The mechanical energy for washing the clothes is provided by the tumbling action of the drums. This action agitates the clothes and ensures that the heat and the chemical action are distributed across the surface of all the clothes.

Without the them, the clothes will not be washed properly. The drum will be usually of rotating nature that rotates the cloths for advanced washing. The speed of the drum is controlled by the motor that is associated with the equipment's mechanism. The drum is rotated by a motor and a belt. The drum brakes will put an end to the agitation bringing it to rest.

Types of Washing Machine Drums

The type of the appliance is determined by the type of the drum that is used. Without the said appliance, the machine will not work and the clothes will not be washed. The clothes are actually loaded to the drum of the appliance and its capacity is determined by the capacity of the drum.

Top loading agitating

These types of appliances move the clothes by rotating the agitator, which is a winged pole like structure in the middle of the drum. As the drum vibrates, the pole is rotated and the clothes are moved. These types of appliances are less expensive but they are rough on clothes.

Top loading impelling

The one with impeller does not have a pole but it has a fan like structure at the bottom of the drum. This fan propels the water and the clothes are moved along with the water. Since the agitation is applied on water rather than clothes, this type of the machine can be used for delicate garments. They are more expensive than the agitator model but the modern day front loading machines are available with impellers at affordable price.

Front loading

The one with the front loading model lacks the agitator as well as the propeller. Here, the drum tumbles and the clothes are moved by the tumbling action of the drum. These types of appliances are expensive as the drums are of high quality with powerful motors capable of tumbling the drum.

Common Problems related to Washing Machine Drum

The common problem is the tumbling action of the drum that becomes noisy. When you overload it, the drum will not be able to move the clothes as there will be no space for the movement. This will create strain on the drum making more noise. When you remove certain clothes, you can reduce the noise enabling free movement of clothes. Sometimes, the drum may not rotate preventing the washing machine to function properly.

This may be because of various reasons. Generally, the drum will consist of small holes that allow water to come in. Sometimes, the hooks and the pins in the clothes may get stuck to the holes preventing the tumbling motion of the drum. The agitators that are present in the agitating model may break due to sudden tumbling actions.

In such cases, you can easily remove the agitator by unscrewing and replace it with a new one. The belt that is associated with the motor rotates the drum and if this belt is damaged, the drum will not move. You have to replace the belt if such problem occurs.

How to take care of washing machine drum

While purchasing the washing machine, check if there is a soft padding between the drum and the outer lid. This will prevent friction in the machine as the drum spins to clean the clothes. While you put the clothes in the washing machine, ensure that the hooks and pins are locked up so that they don't stick in the drum holes.

Avoid over loading the machine. You have to provide ample space for its movement; otherwise, your drum will have to do over work and will reduce the lifetime. You have to check the motor and the belt periodically so that the belt is in correct position. If the belt gets loose or if it breaks, your drum will not spin.

Buying a Water Purification System - What to Consider When Calculating Cost

When you want to select the best water purification system for your home, you are inevitably faced with the issue of cost. You need to consider not only the initial purchase price, but also how expensive it is to maintain it.

Below, I give you a list of the elements that should go into your cost equation. In my analysis, I make references to the most popular water purifier technologies now available, which are: Filters, Reverse Osmosis (RO) units, distillers and Ultraviolet (UV) units.

Purchase price

This varies greatly, according to the type and complexity of water purifier you choose. The determining factor for your choice of system should be the range of pollutants you need to remove from your water. You should collect this information beforehand, either through the annual water quality report provided to you by your utility, or through a private test that you can get from a water testing laboratory.

In general, the higher the number of pollutants you want to remove, the higher the number of filtration stages you want to pass the input water through. This makes the price go higher.

Just to give you an indication of the tag prices you could expect, there are simple granular carbon filters starting from just $25 and there are water purifiers combining UV, redox and carbon filters starting from $400 up to $800.

Installation cost

More often than not, the purchase price quoted does not include installation cost. This is because within a given type of water purification system different models may or may not require installation; many of them just sit on a counter top or snap onto a faucet and are ready to use.

If a water purifier does require installation, it can often be done by anyone who is handy with basic tools. If a professional installs it, expect a cost of $100 to $200 beyond the purchase price, depending on the complexity of the installation.

At any rate, always clarify with the company whether purchase price includes installation as well.

Cost per gallon

The last element in the cost equation is the ongoing cost of ownership of the purifier, measured by how much (typically between 6 to 25 cents) it costs to produce one gallon of pure water. It includes the cost of replacing and installing whatever replaceable components each technology uses, as well as the cost of electricity needed to operate and the water bill.

As far as replacing components, typically it is assumed that filters are replaced every six months, RO membranes every two years and UV lamps once a year. As for distillers, since they don't have any replaceable parts, the cost is totally dependent on the cost of electricity. Also, take into account that RO units waste a lot of water, so you should expect that your water bill will be a big part of cost per gallon for this type of water purifier.

Among the filters, the least expensive (purchase price wise) pour through pitcher filters have the highest cost per gallon because the small canister filters need to be replaced frequently, typically every six to eight weeks. In general, the larger the filter, the greater the initial expense, but the lower the cost per gallon after purchase.

In conclusion, I should say that your determining factor for your water purification system selection should be its effectiveness and efficiency for your particular case, i.e. how many contaminants it removes and to what extent from the water that you are getting at your house.

So, I will stress again that it is very important that you know what contaminants you want to remove, before you consider buying a water purifier.

After you short list all the systems that are OK with the quality criteria, then you should go for the least expensive.

What is an HDTV Tuner Card?

Over the years, computers have become an important part of people's lives. After all, where before, people only used computers for accounting or making reports, people now turn to them for all sorts of entertainment. Computers can be easily customized and upgraded, too. Indeed, there are many computer accessories you can add or attach to your computer to personalize it or keep up with the times. The HDTV tuner card is one such accessory, and one quickly becoming popular as TV shows march towards High Definition.

What are HDTV tuner cards? HDTV tuner cards are devices which receive HD signals, particularly MPEG-2 encoded packets which it then transmits to a software application. In this manner, they work in the same way as HDTV tuner boxes or Set-Top-Boxes (STBs), which receive HD signals and displays them on the screen of your HDTV. HDTV tuner cards are different from STBs in many ways, though, mainly because HDTV tuner cards are inserted or attached into a computer while an STB connects directly to the HDTV monitor. They are better in some ways, too.

For one, HDTV tuner cards allow you to record and pause the HD content - a feature which few, high-end STBs currently offer. They also have a better Electronic Program Guide (EPG) and are even cheaper than most STBs. HDTV tuner cards have some cons, too, though, such as being harder to install and the fact that it requires your computer to be on for it to work. This, in turn, can mean more energy consumption, and sometimes, more noise.

There are two types of HDTV tuner cards. The first type is the PCI card which you can slip into your computer. These are especially convenient for laptops, making it easier to carry them around. PCI cards are faster, too, since they are connected directly to the motherboard, although you have to open the case in order to insert them, which takes more time and can be difficult for non-techies. On the other hand, the second type, USB tuner cards are external devices simply attached to your computer.

To choose which type of tuner card to get, you have to gauge your computer skills, as well as the slots on your computer. If you have too many USB devices already, like a USB keyboard, a USB mouse and a USB wireless card, then you might want to get a PCI tuner card, especially since you want to have a slot free for plugging in your USB drive or the USB cable from your cellphone or digital camera. You can always buy a USB hub, though. Also, keep in mind that PCI tuner cards are more expensive, though, and becoming less and less common.

Before you get a tuner card, though, you should ask yourself first whether or not you really need one. After all, HDTV tuners are not always necessary. If your HDTV already comes with its built-in HDTV tuner, as opposed to being just an HD-Ready TV, then buying a tuner card is no longer necessary - unless you want to watch HDTV on both your HDTV monitor and your computer.

If you need an HDTV tuner card or are already bent on buying one, you can now compare your options. There are many HDTV tuner cards available - both PCI and USB - so make sure you consider the features, the brand and the cost. The most important factor is compatibility, though. Different tuner cards have different software and hardware requirements, so make sure your computer can meet these. Otherwise, you will need to upgrade your computer first.

Once you have your HDTV tuner card, you can install it on your computer, connect it to your cable box and configure it. You can just follow the instructions on the manual or ask someone to do this for you if you find it really confusing. Afterwards, you should now be able to get HD signals on your computer and transmit them to your HDTV monitor if you want, so you can watch HDTV the way it was meant to be enjoyed.

Appliance Repair is the Smart Solution to Saving Money - Repair Instead of Replacing!

With money as tight as it is these days, that rumbling noise in the dishwasher or that persistent leak in the washing machine can seem ominous. After all, who has the money to replace major appliances when they break? But just because your appliance is broken doesn't mean you have to replace it-why not have it repaired instead. Call your local appliance repair technician to quickly and affordably get your household appliances back in tip-top shape!

While it may just seem easier to replace your appliances when they aren't working properly, repairing your appliances is usually more efficient and affordable. Just about any appliance in your home can be fixed, although some repairs are more expensive than others. Keep in mind, though, that virtually every appliance repair will be hundreds cheaper than replacement! Call your local technician to fix:

  • Kitchen Appliances
  • Built-In Ovens
  • Stoves
  • Dishwashers
  • Disposals
  • Freezers
  • Hoods
  • Microwaves
  • Ranges
  • Refrigerators
  • Laundry Appliances
  • Washers
  • Dryers
  • Air Conditioners
  • Even Hot Water Heaters

Most professional appliance repairmen service a wide variety household appliances from virtually all manufacturers, so whether you're having a problem with the oven range or the freezer, they have the expertise to address your problem. Those who have been in the business for years have seen just about every appliance problem at least once-whether it's a burned out garbage disposal motor or a toy car stuck in the clothes dryer-and they have what it takes to get your appliance working again.

Remember, most appliance repair jobs require a professional. You may think that washer repair looks like a breeze, but once you start disassembling the washing machine, it usually starts to look much harder! It pays to call a professional appliance repair company because not only are you dealing with potentially dangerous electrical wiring, but the simple truth is that DIY repair attempts most frequently result in a later call to the pros. And, because your appliance repair technician then has to reassemble the appliance before he can determine the cause of the original problem, your repair bill ends up being more than if you'd called the repairman to start with. When you make a habit of calling your local technician as soon as you realize there's a problem with your dryer, fridge, or oven, you save in the end. In most cases, the appliance repair experts can head off a potentially major issue by making a minor repair.

An Ionic Air Cleaner Will Provide Clean Fresh Air in Your Home

The air we breathe is no longer as pure and safe as the air once was. One of the many factors that contribute to the pollution in the air and increasing number of dangerous elements are the factories. The residue of their used chemicals mixes up with the air and to most sensitive people can cause various respiratory illnesses such as colds, flu and allergic rhinitis. Since most of these factors are beyond our control, how could we protect our families from suffering in illnesses that a polluted air could bring? An Ionic air cleaner can help solve these issues in our homes.

Air cleaners will help solve the most common problems facing the human society. With the aid of this innovative technology, we can now enjoy a much cleaner, purified and safer air.

There are many options to choose from when it comes to which type of device to install in your home. Many factors should be considered when getting one installed in your home such as the price, style, capacity and environment. One of the best options is the ionic air cleaner. This type of device is known for its efficient cleaning power. By turning the dirt into a negative charge state, it will fall down to the floor. Thus, the particulates will no longer be present in the air and you can now visibly clean it.

In using the ionic air cleaner, it is best to seek medical advice and guidance for it is known to produce some amount of ozone. This element can be very harmful if not properly regulated and not used with proper moderation. Manufacturers recommend that in using this type of air cleaner, safety precautions should be observed such as follows:

1. Continuous Operation

Be sensitive. Do not just follow certain steps when you think it is no longer bearable. Your nose should be able to guide you through the whole process.

2. Schedule maintenance

The most common mistake of many people is when something is installed, that is the end of it. Little did we realize that the tricky part is how we maintain something? Make sure to schedule a time wherein you could clean and maintain your ionic air cleaner. Among all air cleaners, this type needs supervision and careful maintenance to continually enjoy its good condition and service.

3. Avoid using aerosols

Certain contradicting or contaminating chemicals such as insecticides, air fresheners, perfumes and deodorants should not be used while running the air purifier.

Keep in mind that there is no perfect all-in-one solution for everybody's needs. Specific problems need specific solutions so there is not really such a general solution for everything. In the case of choosing the right air cleaner, remember the specific needs of your family and do not just rely on word of mouth. What might have worked for Peter may not work for John. There are many types of cleaning devices out in the market today. Getting an ionic air cleaner can be a good option if you are only looking to clean the air that you breathe.

Washing Machine Faucet - How to Replace a Common Faucet

It is necessary that the washing machine feed pipe should be connected to the washing machine faucet to let the water come into the machine. Without such valve, the pipe cannot be connected and the water supply cannot be given to the machine. The valve for washing machine is different from ordinary ones.

The reason for this is that the end of the faucet should be fitted to the feed pipe of the washing machine. Regular kitchen valves will not be suitable for feeding water to the washing machine. It should durable and rust free. When there is a leak in the faucet, then proper water supply will not be provided to the washing machine and hence the washing process will be delayed in addition to wastage of water.

Types of Washing Machine Faucet

The water pressure should be uniform and you should buy a faucet accordingly if you want to prevent problems with the washing machine. Most washing machine faucets are T shaped to enable free water flow into the washing machine.

The valves may be made of plastic or nickel or brass. These will be wall mounted so that the feed pipe can be connected easily. The plastic version can be easy to install and to use and additionally corrosion problem can be avoided. However, it is to be noted that even though plastic is durable, it may break easily. Use of metallic faucets will be durable but there are high chances of corrosion. Depending on your budget, you can choose the type you need.

Common Problems

Many people have several problems associated with their valves. Since the water used for washing is hard water, the salt may settle down in the faucet reducing the flow of water. You have to install separate ones for hot water and cold water supply to the washing machine.

Corrosion may occur in metallic pipes that can be fixed to some extent. But once the valve starts corroding, you have to look for a plumber to replace it to prevent further damage. If its height is not proper, you will not get a constant water supply to the washing machine. Before fixing it, you should take care of its height and reach. If you feel that the water pressure is not sufficient, check the pipelines for blockage.

If there are any blocks, call for a plumber to fix them up. Leakage is a very common problem that occurs with washing machine faucets. Sometimes, using adhesives will help you to stop leakage if there are minor cracks. But if it becomes loose, then you have to check if the screws are in correct position. Cheap and inexpensive versions may work well for a few days but they will not be durable. You have to go for high quality versions if you want durability.

How to replace a common faucet

Replacement is a common task that you can find in many homes. It would need to be replaced because it may be having a leak or you may wish to enhance the look of your room. When you have a leaky washing machine faucet, then it is obvious that you have to replace it.

To start with, you should have a new faucet that is to be fitted instead of the old one. You can go for high quality faucets that are durable and prevent leakage.
You should have a monkey wrench, basin wrench and pipe wrench ready for replacing a faucet.
For replacing the faucet, you have to first cut down the water supply. Close the main valve to shut off water. If you have a separate valve for the pipeline in which the old faucet is connected, you can shut down that valve alone.
After cutting the supply, turn the faucet on so that you drain out all the remaining water in the system. With the basin wrench, remove the washers that attach the faucet to the cabinet.
If you have any leaky valves, you can use the same tools to replace the valves also.
Then attach the new faucet in the place and screw it up. Also use your hand to tight the new faucet. Make sure that the washers are placed in proper places when you attach the new faucet.
Now open the valves and check if the water supply is even.

How Washing Machine Belts Work?

Washing Machine Belt is defined as one used in the machine and this helps the spinning of the washing tub. The washing tub is connected with it and it induces the fast rotation of the wash tub swiftly.

The belt should remain tightened for the faster rotation of the tub and this helps in removing the dirt from the clothes. It plays an important role in washing the clothes and this helps in the tumbling action of the wash tub. Frequent usage of washing machine often results in wear and tear of the belt.

As a result, you may need to change it every year or so. There are some symptoms that signal to you that it is going haywire. For example, you start to realize that your washer is starting to rotate slowly - this could be the sign of a loosened belt. Another common symptom is a squealing noise, which is also a result of the tearing of the drive in the washing machine

How Washing Machine Belts Work?

It works with the help of mechanical and thermal energy. It is bounded to the wash tub in a circular motion and this induces in the easy movement of the tub in a circular motion.

It is responsible for the effective running of the washing machine. The machine at times makes a squealing noise and this is due to the wear and tear and it can easily be replaced. Water hoses and drain hoses are connected to the wash tub and the wash tub is connected with the belt.

These are interlinked with each other and any damages caused will reflect on the whole washing machine. The washing machine belt is connected to the motor of the machine. When the washing machine is plugged into the electrical connection, the motor starts working and forces it to rotate along with the washing tub. Swift rotation of the tub helps in the removal of stubborn and stiff stains.

Common problems

Washing machine belt faces the problem of splitting into two halves due to the frequent usage of the washing machine. Hence this can be solved by its replacement. Since it is connected to the motor, the heat energy caused by the washing machine motor makes it remain hard and results in the slow spinning of the tub. Frequent usage brings out a squealing noise in the machine.

Since it is made from rubber they are bound to tear out and this results in the stoppage of the tub. The process of replacement involves breakage due to too much of tightening. It is rested upon the motor and in the process of washing there are chances of the screws coming out and this results in the loosening.

Tips

The Washing Machine Belt plays an important role in the washing process. Hence it should be used with proper care and attention. Good quality ones should be used for a long life, as they offer durability and flexibility.

They are made from rubber material and hence better quality ones should be purchased. Replacing of the old one with the new one result in tightening of the belt to the washing machine and too much of tightening results in the breakage. In the process of installing it, the repair guide book should be thoroughly read.

This helps in knowing about the inner parts of the washing machine and helps in the easy refixation. It is rested upon the motor and it is run on the tub with the help of the motor. Hence better quality machine ones should be used to provide speedy spinning to the wash tub. It is attached to the pulley wheel on the motor and great care should be taken on the installation process.

After fixing it, the screws in the rear access panel should be fitted correctly. Setting up of the washing machine in the strong mode makes the belt to run faster and this results in the breakage. Hence the proper mode should be selected in the washing process and this helps in the long run durability.

The above problems and tips regarding the washing machine belts help in acquiring a complete knowledge regarding them. Reading of this article helps in arriving at the uses offered by the it. Hence the washing machine guide manual should be completely studied while installing and fixing it.
